Billy Packer is a former American sportscaster and a published author. He spent more than three decades as a color analyst for television coverage of college basketball.

Packer is a graduate of Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He attended Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina from 1958 to 1962 and played guard on the school’s basketball team for his last three years. He began his career in broadcasting in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1972, when he was asked to fill in as color analyst for a regionally televised ACC game. Packer became a regular the next season.

Packer worked first with NBC (1974–1981) and then with CBS (1981–2008) at the network level. From 1975 to 2008, he covered every NCAA Men’s Basketball Division I Championship, including the Final Four. He also covered Raycom Sports ACC matches for many years. Packer was awarded a 1993 Sports Emmy Award.

In 2005, as reported by The Washington Post, Packer was awarded the Marvin Francis Award for “notable achievement and service in ACC coverage.” On July 15, 2008, CBS announced that the lead broadcast crew of the network would replace Packer with Clark Kellogg. This marked the end of Packer’s 35 consecutive years of coverage as a TV analyst of the NCAA tournament.

He returned to the studio in March 2009 with Bob Knight for Survive and Advance, a Fox Sports Net-produced NCAA tournament preview demonstrate. Packer has also been a color commentator for television broadcasts by the Putt-Putt Professional Putters Association. He called the historic 1982 PPA National Championship, featuring four of the 8 contestants ‘ future Hall of Fame players.

Curt Gowdy, Jim Thacker, Dick Enberg, Al McGuire, Gary Bender, Brent Musburger, and Jim Nantz and Verne Lundquist were among Packer’s broadcast teammates. Packer’s on-air partner was Tim Brant when operating games for Raycom Sports. The on-air partner of Packer was Mel Proctor when Nantz covered the 1992 Winter Olympics for CBS. Packer also played for two matches together with Al McGuire while Jim Nantz covered the 1994 CBS Winter Olympics.
