Carsen Edwards Biography

He was born in Houston, Texas and attended Atascocita High School. He was playing both football and basket as a sophomore and focused more on basketball. He averaged 23.6 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.9 rebounds a contest while being named Player of the Year by the Houston Chronicle. He led Atascocita with averages of 26.3 points, 5.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds per outing, earning MaxPreps All-America Fourth Team and first-team All-State honors in his senior year.

In the Class of 2016 by ESPN,, and he was rated as a four-star recruit and ranked number 88.

As a freshman, he made an immediate impact at Purdue. He played in all 35 games(21 starts) and averaging 10.3 points as well as 2.6 boards and 1.8 assists. In the Big Ten Conference, he was the only freshman to complete the 2016-2017 season with at least 45 three-pointers made (49) and 35 steals (36).

On February 22, 2018, he scored a career-high 40 points, shooting 11 for 19 from the field in a 93-86 win over Illinois. He averaged 18.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game as a sophomore. He led Purdue to a school-record of a 30-win season and was named to the First Team All-Big Ten. When the season ended he declared for the 2018 NBA draft without hiring an agent.

As a senior, he took about 19 shots as opposed to around 13.5 during his sophomore season. He was named the Blue Ribbon Yearbook Pre-Season College Basketball National Player of the Year on September 25, 2018. He dropped another career-high 40 points on 15 of 26 shooting in a 72-68 loss against Texas. He made a school-record of eight three-point shots to go with 38 points in a 99-90 win over Penn State on January 31, 2019.

The United States Basketball Writer’s Association (USBWA) named him to the All American Second-Team. During NCAA Tournament he scored a career-high 42 points in a blowout 87-61 win over the defending champions team Villanova on March 23, 2019.

He was named to the roster of the US national team for the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Egypt, where they won a bronze medal. He was also named to the roster of the US national team for the 2017 Taipei Universiade, where they captured a silver medal.

Tennessee’s Lamonte Turner was called for a foul on Carsen Edwards behind the arc with 1.7 seconds left in regulation. The Purdue junior guard made two of his three free throws, sending the game to overtime.

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said, “It was a foul,” Barnes said. “It was a foul. He missed the shot. Lamonte hit him after the shot. That’s a tough play because, again, we knew — I think actually they were trying to work something inside.”

Barnes added that “It was three feet out of his hand when he hit him. We know the rule. You’ve got to allow the shooter to come back down. It’s a tough one because, in that situation, we know we can’t foul there and they’ve got to make that shot.”
