He later attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Before his acting career, he moved to New York City and worked as a ringer bounce and porter at W Hotel in Times Square for a long time. His first role was in Law and Order. The role required him to be in the harsh water in a kayak for five hours. He didn’t tell the executive he couldn’t swim.

Chris later appeared opposite Denzel Washington on Broadway in a 2010 creation of August Wilson’s Fences. He later joined Gotham in season 2, playing Batman’s correct hand man Lucius Fox. In addition, he plays two totally inconsequential characters named, “Thomas Walker”. In Showtime’s “Homeland” and also in a “Law & Order” episode “Gaijin” (S14E22).

Chalk is mostly known for his roles as journalist Gary Cooper in The Newsroom,  Marine Tom Walker in Homeland, and murderer Jody Adair in Justified. He has also been in multiple Law & Order episodes, the 2013 film 12 Years a Slave, and the 2010 Broadway play Fences.

When They See Us is an upcoming American drama web television miniseries created by Ava DuVernay for Netflix. DuVernay also serves as a writer for the series and is expected to direct every episode. The series documents the famous Central Park jogger case from 1989 in which a jogger was attacked in Central Park in New York City.

In that case, five juvenile males were subsequently convicted of the crime before being exonerated in 2002. The series is set to feature an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, Felicity Huffman, Famke Janssen, Niecy Nash, Reece Noi, Aunjanue Ellis, Kylie Bunbury, and Storm Reid. It is set to premiere on May 31, 2019.
