Chuck Smith Calvary Chapel
He is the founder of the Calvary Chapel Movement which started as a Christian Commune. When the church was founded, it operated as a cross-cultural missions organization that bridged the so-called generation gap during the Vietnam War Period.
Calvary Chapel set the way for a less formal and contemporary approach in its worship and public crusades such as baptisms in the Pacific and crusades on the beach. It’s commentary-style of preaching kept the Calvary Chapels close to the text of the Bible and was readily comprehensible by many listeners. His impact on evangelical Christianity is profound, widespread, and largely undisputed.
In his 1978 book End Times, He predicted the generation of 1948 would be the last generation, and that the world would end by 1981. He supported his beliefs again in his 1980 publication Future Survival saying that from his understanding of the biblical prophecies, he is convinced that God would come for his church before the end of 1981. When the prediction failed, Smith ended up losing a large number of his followers.
He also attracted criticism for drawing connections between disasters and divine wrath against abortion as well as homosexuality.
