Cristela Alonzo Cars 3 Interview

espnW: Did you have any input on your character’s name and backstory development?

Cristela Alonzo: I did not have input on naming the car. That was already predetermined by Disney/Pixar. However, I had some influence on the backstory. The character of Cruz hadn’t  been fully developed when I first stepped into the role. I started talking about my life during the voice-over session, and my story conquered with the team. .

espnW: Did you provide any suggestions on the design of Cruz?

Cristela Alonzo: Not the design. But they used a lot of my facial expressions for Cruz. Overall, the body came from what the Disney/Pixar team thought the character should exude. But it’s funny to see the finished product.

espnW: What was the production process like for you?

Cristela Alonzo: I did most of my voice-over sessions by myself. But I did get the chance to work with Owen Wilson for a day. I think having that time together with him solidified the mentor ship connection in the film. It helped to do that in person.

espnW: How does working in animation differ from your television and stand-up projects?

Cristela Alonzo: I don’t have to do my hair and makeup to do voice-overs. I can show up in yoga pants, or as I call them, “My everything but yoga pants,” and we just go in and record. Also, it’s nice to see yourself in a different form. It helps give off a different emotion.

espnW: In the film, Cruz is told that she doesn’t “look” the part of a race car and, therefore, doesn’t belong on the track. Have you ever been told that you didn’t fit in?

Cristela Alonzo: That was taken directly from my real life. I always wanted to work in film and TV as a kid. It was a dream of mine. A lot of people in my neighborhood didn’t understand it or said I couldn’t achieve it.

espnW: With the launch of your ABC sitcom “Cristela” in 2014, you became the first Latina to create, produce, write, and star in your own U.S. network show. How do feel about carrying the responsibility of being the first?

Cristela Alonzo: I love having the word “first” used in referral to me, because that means that someone finally did that “thing.” I think it’s important to break those barriers, and that indicates that I’m not going to be the last. For me, everything I do in this business is about opening doors and holding them open so that other people can walk through them. People have to stop thinking that we are all fighting for one spot. If you put in the work, if you work hard enough, a spot will be made for you.

espnW: What do you think audiences will take away from seeing Cruz in “Cars 3”?

Cristela Alonzo: A lot of times we put gender into play, and that frightens us. This story is bigger than being a girl car or boy car in racing. It’s about who is the best one for the job. Who has put in the most work and effort? When we see “Cars 3” we are reminded, “Oh, yes, a girl can do that too.
