Darrin Horn Coaching career

Assistant coach
Horn served as an assistant coach from 1995 to 1997 at WKU for then-coach Matt Kilcullen before departing for Morehead State University to serve under Kyle Macy for two seasons before departing for Marquette.
He was an assistant coach at Marquette University under Tom Crean. That Marquette team was led by future NBA players Dwyane Wade and Travis Diener. Crean and Horn first crossed paths when Horn played at WKU and Crean was an assistant for the Hilltoppers under head coach Ralph Willard.
Head coach
After his tenure at Marquette, Horn was hired as the head coach at Western Kentucky University to replace Dennis Felton, who left for the University of Georgia after three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his hiring, Travis Diener recommended Horn to the then-WKU athletic director Wood Selig.
Horn compiled a record of 111–48 in five seasons at his alma mater, WKU. He led the Hilltoppers to the Sweet 16, the third round of the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, a tournament run that included one of the most celebrated buzzer beaters in college basketball history, a three-pointer by Ty Rogers against Drake in overtime. Their run ended with a 10-point loss to top-seeded UCLA.
On April 1, 2008, Horn was hired as the new men’s coach at the University of South Carolina, replacing Dave Odom.
On March 13, 2012, he was fired as head coach of the Gamecocks after going 60-63 in 4 seasons with only one postseason appearance.
On April 23, 2019, Horn was hired as head coach by Northern Kentucky University replacing John Brannen who left to take the University of Cincinnati job.
Coaching style
Horn’s teams are known for their up-tempo style of play, full-court trapping defense, and conditioning. While at WKU, Horn’s teams averaged 47% field goal accuracy and averaged approximately 77 points per game.

Darrin Horn Basketball Coach

Darrin Horn to replace John Brannen as NKU Norse head coach

Darrin Horn, associate head coach at the University of Texas, is Northern Kentucky University’s choice to replace John Brannen as the Norse’s sixth men’s basketball head coach.
NKU said there will be a news conference to formally announce Horn on Thursday.
The Cincinnati Bearcats introduced Brannen as their new head coach April 14, and NKU announced that a national search for Brannen’s replacement was underway.
Several candidates were interviewed in Atlanta on Tuesday.
“It’s a thrill for me to be named the head coach at Northern Kentucky,” Horn said in a press release. “It was a job I’ve had my eye on for a while now. There are great momentum and energy surrounding both the basketball program and the University. Norse Basketball is a winning program with players who know what it takes to win. I am impressed with the vision that both Ken (Bothof) and President Vaidya have for the program and University. My family and I can’t wait to join the Norse family and Northern Kentucky community.”
Horn, 46, is a native of Glasgow, Ky. He has been a head coach at Western Kentucky and South Carolina and an assistant at Western Kentucky, Morehead State, and Marquette. His career record as a head coach is 171-112 (.604).
“I am pleased to welcome Darrin, along with his wife Carla and children Caroline and Walker, to Northern Kentucky University,” NKU Director of Athletics Ken Bothof said in a statement “Throughout the hiring process, it became clear that Darrin was the right fit to lead the Norse men’s basketball program. Not only does he have ties to Kentucky from his prep and collegiate playing days, but he’s also been a successful head coach at Western Kentucky.”
In five years with WKU, his teams went 111-48 with one NCAA Tournament (2008 Sweet 16) and two NIT appearances. His South Carolina teams went 60-63 in four years with one NIT. He was promoted to associate head coach at Texas last summer by Shaka Smart.

“Darrin did a tremendous job at Western Kentucky,” said Mike DeCourcy, a college basketball analyst for The Sporting News. “He had a phenomenal eye for talent and did a great job of developing the players he recruited. He played an exciting style and was always competitive with the best teams in his league and the levels above. He’ll do a great job at Northern Kentucky.
“I think his experience at Western is most applicable to what he’ll face at NKU. They just didn’t get enough SEC-level players to excel at South Carolina. But I have zero doubts about him as a head coach. I’ve seen what he can do.”
Horn played high school basketball at Tates Creek High School in Lexington, leading his team to a state runner-up finish in 1991. He played college ball for Western Kentucky from 1991-95, advancing to the NCAA Tournament three times.
