Emmy Fink Discover Wisconsin

Emmy Fink said she’s wanted to do something in television for as long as she could remember. She said her zest for learning new things and her love for Wisconsin and outdoor activities are assets she brought to her new role as host of Discover Wisconsin. “I truly love it,” said Fink. “What I do for a job is what other people do for fun.” She said she feels blessed to do what she does and be able to share it with viewers.

Fink said she watched Discover Wisconsin with her family when she was a kid and liked episodes highlighting places she had never visited or that let her learn something new. She said the show inspired a lot of family road trips. She grew up in Racine County in the town of Yorkville, the daughter of Gary and Suzy Fink.

She graduated from UW-Whitewater with a double major in broadcast journalism and K-12 physical education. She served as a substitute physical education teacher for six months before her first job working for The CW in Madison. Fink, who lives in Madison, said she was going to graduate school when she got the opportunity with Discover Wisconsin.

Fink had just interviewed for a job when a local news director called to let her know that Discover Wisconsin was looking for a new host. She believes being the first person to submit their audition materials helped her stand out from the 400 people who participated in the five-month audition process. Fink said including a reel showing that she enjoys being active outdoors also helped. Discover Wisconsin named her as the new host last June. She replaced former Miss Wisconsin Stephanie Klett, who had hosted the show since 1993 but left last January to serve as the Secretary of the Department of Tourism.

Fink said she was surprised to learn what goes into making an episode of Discover Wisconsin. Her television background was in producing two-minute features on a tight deadline and moving on to the next one. She said the production of an episode is meticulous – from meeting with a community that has an interest in being on the show, to writing a script and figuring out the people to interview. Fink said it can take a year to plan and shoot an episode if the community offers activities in all four seasons, plus time to edit the material and complete the audio.

“My eyes got opened up,” Fink said. She first appeared in an episode that aired in November featuring Wisconsin’s Dairyland history, and her first destination show aired in January. Fink said it’s a good feeling to finally have her shows start airing. Upcoming shows feature Ozaukee County and charter fishing in Lake Michigan, Sheboygan, Eagle River and Land of Lakes. Discover Wisconsin’s 350th episode will air in March and feature Green Bay.

Discover Wisconsin, now in its 25th year, has featured more than 8,000 destinations. Fink said that while destination shows will remain the flagship of Discover Wisconsin, they are trying to come up with theme-type shows to help keep it fresh, like featuring the best cheeseburgers in the state or the best ski hills. “It helps that people are always changing,” Fink said. “And there are new attractions and new restaurants.”

She said upcoming episodes will feature motorcycles, bicycles, and snowmobiles. The motorcycle feature put her on a motorcycle for the first time. Fink, a certified yoga instructor, said she would love to do an episode featuring yoga. She tries to be physically active every day and takes her yoga mat with her wherever she goes. At her last job, she pursued an initiative to get local elementary school kids to exercise every day.

“It’s a big part of my life,” she said of physical fitness. “To tie that in with Discover Wisconsin- I would love to do that.” To learn more about Fink and Discover Wisconsin, visit www.discoverwisconsin.com.
