He began his career by making his off-Broadway debut in the ensemble of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical In the Heights in 2007 and he later made his Broadway debut with the musical’s transfer in 2008. He then played the Tin Man in a New York City Center production of The Wiz and he was awarded his first creative team credit, with his original music for the Vineyard Theatre production of Shafrika, The White Girl. He got back in Broadway in the original cast of Green Day’s American Idiot until October of that same year, when he was cast in his breakthrough role as Haywood Patterson in the Broadway premiere of The Scottsboro Boys that led to his first Tony Award nomination in 2011. After being in The Scottsboro Boys’ Broadway run concluded, he later got back to American idiot in March 2011 and would this time assume the role of Favorite Son.
He then got featured as Jake in the American Repertory Theater’s production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that got to be transferred directly to Broadway and played the Richard Rodgers Theatre from January to September 2012. He got back to the Great White Way to take on the iconic role of Billy Bigelow opposite Jessie Mueller in a Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic Carousel and he played his final performance on September 16, 2018.
