Michigan QB Shea Patterson ‘acing’ new offense, players say

ANN ARBOR — While each position group on the Michigan football team’s offense learns its new way of life, the main cog seems to be meshing just fine.

Seven practices in, quarterback Shea Patterson has taken over as the leader and is helping elicit flashbacks, teammates say.

“He’s acing the offense right now,” tight end Nick Eubanks told reporters on Friday. “That’s who most of the guys go to if they need help with the concepts of the offense, patterns, (etc.). Yeah, he’s acing it.”
Michigan’s new-look offense this fall will feature a faster pace and no huddling, coaches say, a departure from the past when Jim Harbaugh-led teams resembled more of a pro-style scheme, heavy in huddling and multiple personnel groupings.
While the Wolverines still plan to use tight ends and fullbacks, it’s going to be in a different way. And with a different look to it.

“He’s been stepping up a lot,” said Eubanks, who caught eight passes for 157 yards in 2018. “He’s being more vocal in the offense. You can look through his eyes and see that he wants to lead. The offense has no problem following his footsteps.

“We’ve just been going off anything he says. Whatever he says, we do.”

Patterson has plenty of experience in a spread system. He played two seasons in the Air-Raid offense at Ole Miss, where he threw for 3,059 yards and 23 touchdowns over 10 games, and also at IMG Academy his senior season of high school.

Michigan tried to tailor some of its offense around him in 2018 — when he threw for 2,600 yards and 22 touchdowns — but his near-65 percent completion percentage and 149.8 QB rating signaled more could have done.

“Yeah, it’s kinda cool seeing him (play),” said starting center Cesar Ruiz, who played with Patterson at IMG Academy. “I don’t really watch him run unless it’s on film. But when I see it on film, I see those flashes of like, ‘Yeah, I’ve seen him do stuff like this before.’”
Helping matters is the personnel Patterson and the Wolverines have returned for 2019. Four of the five starters on the offensive line are back, offering reliability and consistency up front, as is two of Michigan’s top receivers from a season ago.

The downfall this spring, however, has been the number of players missing. Donovan Peoples-Jones and Nico Collins have both been sidelined early on, hurting depth at receiver, while the running backs return just two scholarship players, forcing coaches to move players over from other positions.

Still, there’s plenty of learning going on right now and it helps when your starting quarterback knows the tenets of the system. Michigan will host an open-to-the-public practice at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at Michigan Stadium.

“He’s excited about what we have going on,” new quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels said last month. “He’s part of a quarterback room that is working really hard and really excited to dig into spring and being on the field. And now, practicing real football, not just talking about in the meeting room.

“Shea is excited. And I’m excited for him.”
